Salford Council has given outline planning permission to a new 26 floor residential tower and adjacent 11 floor building planned on Greengate, near Manchester's Victoria.

Developed by Paloma and penned by Stephenson Bell Architects, the proposals will stand next to the approved Canpous Towers if built. Within will be 300 new residential apartments plus the usual ground floor commercial units fronting on to the nearby canal.

The design is highly reminiscent of their taller neighbours with a similar façade treatment of vertical brown strips of cladding and louvres for solar shading.
They also mimic the basic massing of Canopus. The Paloma development is in reality two buildings joined together by a central podium with one as proportionately taller than the other a similar manner to Canopus creating the same staggered effect when viewed along an east/west axis.

On a north/south axis the tower fits in with the proposed neighbours thus creating more coherence to the future Salford skyline and provides another step in height towards the pinnacle of the tallest Canopus tower.

The current application replaces previous designs for a scheme that although proposed was never formally determined by Salford Council. With this outline proposal now accepted Paloma and Stephenson Bell will have to work up a more sophisticated application if they wish to progress further.
