Barratt Plans Major East End Resid

Allies and Morrison has drawn an outline plan for a new 29 storey residential tower and associated buildings on the site of St Andrews Hospital in Devas Street, East London as part of a redevelopment plan by Barratt Homes.

Located next to Bromley-by-Bow Station, the five block proposals over 7.44 acre site features an 85 metre tall tower, Block D on the eastern edge of the site overlooking Twelvetrees Crescent and orientated to give occupants the maximum views of Canary Wharf. A second building, Block E, on the far western corner of the site of 54.5 metres.

Three larger and squatter courtyard blocks line the area of the site that is bounded by Devas Street with each of them having a pinnacle on their north-west section that overlooks the nearby railway cutting.

Phase One will have 195 residential units but in total the scheme will contain 964 new apartments of which an impressive 50% will be aimed at the affordable section of the market.

Realising that families must also be accommodated, apartment sizes will include those with five bedrooms, something of a rarity for developments in London where the mantra is often that apartments are not suitable for family living.

There will also be 2,084 square metres of other space including health services and retail whilst a third of the land on the site will be new public space.

If Tower Hamlets approve the outline planning application establishing what is suitable for the site, a fully detailed one can then be filed that will establish beyond the broad strokes what Barratt plan on having as their redevelopment of St Andrews Hospital.
