Allford Hall Monaghan Morris Colour Up Barking

Architects, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, have designed this new multi coloured regeneration scheme for phase two of the regeneration at Barking Town Centre in London for Redrow.

The five block scheme features largely residential accommodation about 400 metres from Barking station in what could be called part of the Thames Gateway, an area of East London that stretches into Essex which the government wants to build tens of thousands of new homes in.

The blocks are split into the following -

Building 1, situated on Ripple Road. It will be four storeys high with ground floor retail and office above it.

Building 2, sitting behind the local magistrates court. At nine storeys high, it also has ground floor retail and 96 apartments on the other floors.

Building 3, located on Ripple Road. This will be the tower element of the scheme 18 storeys tall, with more ground floor retail and 136 flats above it.

Building 4 will be an 8 storey wholly residential block containing 40 apartments including 18 affordable ones.

Building 5 is the smallest one at 2 storeys. It will have ground floor shops and the upper floors will be storage for the adjacent dwellings.

In terms of design the project is dominated by the bright colours from green to yellow to red that punctuate the smoothly shaped sides of the buildings creating a series of complicated cladding systems. The vibrant gradients as they progress both horizontally and vertically in-between the plainer looking central render materials.

The main source of the colour scheme employed comes from the balconies which are both protruding or recessed depending on the building and the location. In the case of the tower it has recessed windows forming vertical monochromatic stripes with recessed balconies that reveal the entire colour scheme of the development in one building.

Central to the regeneration of the area is the fact that every building has ground floor retail that will animate the streets between the blocks with the aim of turning it into a popular shopping destination.

The scheme has been recommended for approval by the planning officers of the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation. Their planning committee will be meeting today to decide if it sinks or swims.
