Redrow Give A Colourful Touch To Art Deco

The south coast town of Bournemouth is about to get one of its largest developments in years with an eleven floor, largely residential scheme.
Called Terrace Mount, it is being developed by bsuy property firm, Redrow Homes. Cube Design are the architectures who have penned the proposals coming up with a post modernist twist to the existing art-deco housing and hotels that already litter Bournemouth's sea front.
More precisely appearing like a Streamline Moderne building, a late result of the art-deco movement, it features semi circular ends similar to a double-ended ferryboat with the prow overlooking Exeter Road in a commanding position as if it is ready to set sail. Long horizontal lines stretch the bulk of the building past Upper Terrace Road.
Decorated with mostly white cladding, a touch of modernity is added by the architect through the use of coloured panels between the more traditional glazing.
Throughout the design, references to the past abound. It is topped by penthouse levels that rise above the grass covered roof of the central element of the block like the decks of a ship akin to the Bather's Building at San Francisco's Aquatic Park.
The £56 million project will contain 202 new residential units plus ground floor retail outlets and a new restaurant. Provision has also been made for al-fresco dining areas. In the basement will be 150 short stay car parking spaces plus additional space for residents.
If everything goes according to plan, Redrow hope to launch sales of the apartments this summer with completion of the project for occupation at the end of 2009.
